In Belgium, beer is the most popular and most consumed alcoholic beverage, and a symbol of national pride and tradition. The per capita consumption of beer is among the highest in Belgium compared with the rest of Europe. In 1950, 663 breweries were active in Belgium, until 1999, when a large consolidation took place bringing the total number down to 118. Most of the brewers have a strong local heritage and mainly produce for consumption in the local or regional marketplace in Belgium.
